Force Copy a Google Doc

Want to share a Google Doc and have the people you’re sharing with make their own copy?

If you’re using Google Classroom this feature is built in. But what if you want to share with someone who isn’t in your Classroom or you are not using Classroom.

This is an easy way to force students, colleagues, or any other person to make a copy of a Google Doc, Sheet or Slides.

  1. Look at the link (url) of the document you are editing

  1. Simply replace the word “edit” at the end with the word “copy”
  1. Share the new url (with copy at the end) and when someone clicks on it they will be asked/forced to make a copy of the file. (Note: You will still have to change the share settings - to allow viewing of the file.)
This is what they will see:
That’s all there is to it.
