This week I decided to create a presentation for parents about social media use and teens for my tech ed. topic. Parents often ask questions about the different social media sites and how do they keep up with their child's online life. I'm hoping this will answer some of their questions and provide opportunity for discussion. The presentation explains some of the more prevalent social media sites teens are using today and why they like to use these sites. It also has some facts about teen social media use and their feelings about their online presence. While the presentation includes advice for parents regarding their child's social media activities I have also included some educational benefits of social media. I feel this is important because in my classes I do ask students to use social media such as Twitter, Blogger, & Pinterest, to name a few (explaining to parents I am trying to help students create a positive digital footprint). I would like to show this presentation during open house (if time permits) or share with parents via the class website.
I have also created a short questionnaire for parents to find out what they know or would like to learn about their childs' digital world.
Parent Questionnaire
Well done, Debbie. This type of information is so important.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! You clearly spent a lot of time on this presentation. It's consolidated in an easily understandable way with factual info that is staggering and eye opening. Excellent work!
ReplyDeleteGreat presentation, Debbie! As a teacher and parent of a teenager and a preteen, here is one rule I suggest for all parents. The cell phone is plugged in/charged at night someplace other than the child'd bedroom. It's amazing the late hours kids keep because they are texting or on social media. My youngest doesn't have a cell phone yet, but my oldest has to plug his phone in my bedroom or office by 9:30PM every night. He doesn't like the rule, but he respects it. Also, we had a little situation with him and had to lock down the house wifi last summer. Basically we have two routers; one for my husband and I and one for the kids. The kids router has some filters (while are not 100%), but the best thing about it is that is is timed to turn off at 9:00PM every night and doesn't turn back on until 6:30AM. BEST THING EVER!
