Digital Footprints

This Digital Footprints unit gets students thinking about the digital impression they are creating.  Students use a variety of engaging strategies, pacing, sequence, activities, materials, resources, technologies, and grouping as they work through this unit.

Included in this unit: Resource Videos, Answering Q's in Twitter, Searching their own digital presence, Group-work to discuss Digital Footprint guiding questions, creation of a Word Cloud that represents their online presence, creation of a magazine cover that "tells the story" of their online presence, and working in pairs or individually to create an interactive infographic related to the subject of Digital Footprints!

Some of the tools used:

  • Word Cloud - using Tagxedo - This site is easy to use and it provides many images for creating the word cloud.  You can also upload your own images.  I like this site because it allows you to download the word clouds as a .jpg which then allows you place your word clouds in documents, presentations, blogs, etc.
  • Magazine Cover - using Big Huge Labs - This site provides several templates for creating a magazine cover.  There are some customization options available too.  If the cover doesn't come out quite right you can go back and edit.  This site also allows you to upload an image for the background of the cover.  When the cover is complete it can be downloaded as a .jpg and used elsewhere too.  One thing  you can't do is save an unfinished cover...if class ends students will have to start over the next day
  • Infographic - Students created an interactive infographic related to the subject of Digital Footprints! I gave students the option if using Piktochart or Smore for the infographic.
    • Piktochart is a fairly simple online infographic tool. The site provides many templates to choose from and they can all be customized. Links and videos can be added to the infographics too! When the infographic is complete Piktochart provides a link to the infographic, it can be embedded into a website or blog, and it can be downloaded as. Piktochart also has a presentation mode for the infographics. See sample.
